Are you hooked on Facebook? Well, you're not alone. This Retrevo Gadgetology study examines obsessive social media site behavior.
Online With One Eye Open
Close to half of the people we surveyed admit to connecting while in bed, throughout the night, and first thing in the morning, with more of the under-25 crowd being twilight tweeters.
Twitter vs. the Morning Show
Can Regis, Roker and JuJu win over the 16% of users who digest their morning "news" on Facebook and Twitter? This is becoming increasingly difficult.
A Breed of Their Own
iPhone owners stand apart from the rest, as they connect with Facebook and Twitter in more places, more often.
Anonymity
Can social media really be habit forming? Put this in your pipe: 56% of social media users need to check Facebook at least once a day, and 12% check in every couple of hours.
Is This a Bad Time?
We were curious if people minded being interrupted by messaging. We found over 40% didn't mind at all. In fact, 32% said meals were not off limits, and 7% would even check messages during intimate moments.
Conclusion
If nearly half of social medialites have trouble sleeping without their Facebook, and then jump back on immediately in the morning, it just might warrant some sort of get-in-touch-with-your-emotions program off in the mountains somewhere. It also appears that social media may be chipping away at conventional sources of news, with many respondents saying tweets trump their LCD or Plasma TV for that morning cup of news.
