One of the most confusing aspects of internet marketing is the importance of social media. The reason for the confusion amongst most marketers is how to use it to bring in leads and to make money. Most people try and follow the same tactics they use for email marketing and see little or no results. But the key is to take a different approach and stand out from the crowd.

Build relationships
This is the most important factor and is much overlooked. You cannot just pitch products on social media sites. Instead focus on adding value, whether that is through general conversation or business related topics. Remember that most people are on these social media sites as a break from work and to enjoy themselves and socialize.

Do not hard-sell products
If you cannot sell products then you may wonder how it is possible to make any money. The key is to direct people into your sales funnel by leading them to content sites such as your blog or video page. Create a free video or report and let people try it out. They will likely end up signing up for your list or keeping an interest in what you are promoting.

Give good content
If you can provide valuable content for no cost then you can gain a name for yourself in your market. You can gain a certain celebrity from your ubiquity and people will naturally seek out more information on you instead of feeling they are being pitched to. Even if they are aware you are promoting a product they will not feel you have abused the trust if you keep your sales separate from your social media relationship.
