Those who snore and their sleep-deprived partners make up a significant part of the U.S. population. No matter who retreats from the relationship bed, the often-utilized alternative is the family or living room sofa. Or, refusing the alternative, and twisting and turning all night with the “buzz saw” can strain a relationship, not to mention the deep circles sleepless nights create. A solution and trend in homes is to have an adjacent space to the master bedroom serve as a “snoring room.” And surprisingly enough, the “buzz saw” is often the one delegated to the snoring room.

Quietly placed at the top of wish lists by spouses building new construction homes, builders and designers are now offering the option, and many marriages are embracing them. Often, this new refuge is a room accessible directly from the master bedroom. Some homeowners take a designated sitting area in a builder’s floor plan, enclose and soundproof the new room.

Snoring rooms are decorated in colors and style of the master bedroom. One rule of thumb is that a snoring room must have a minimum of a double bed. This encourages visits from the other half. The room dimensions vary, but most decorators said twelve-by-twelve feet would comfortably hold a bed, nightstand and a comfortable chair for reading.

As with any emerging trend, snoring rooms are popular in new homes were modifications are easier. But, one contractor said, he’s seeing an up tick in renovating existing homes to create a “snore escape”. If you include a snoring room in your home, it’s too early to say how they will be embraced at resale by homebuyers. At this point, plan on un-doing a snoring room before placing your home on the market.
