Some people think that snoring problems are overblown; that this is nothing more than a nuisance, a joke in a family sitcom or cartoon. Curtains billow in and out while a frazzled wife wraps a pillow around her head, her husband "sawing logs" next to her. The audience finds it funny when the husband seems as if he's done, all is quiet and well, and the wife starts to drop off - only to be startled awake again by a sudden gasp or snort from the man next to her. Funny indeed, at least in a sitcom or cartoon.
But in reality, snoring and serious health problems can be closely related. Chronic insomnia can also cause or contribute to aching muscles, blurred vision, cardiovascular disease, clinical depression, colorblindness, decreased mental activity and concentration, depersonalization, a weakened immune system, dizziness, fainting, general confusion, hallucinations (audio as well as visual), hand tremors, headache, hernia, hyperactivity, hypertension, impatience, irritability, memory lapses or loss, nausea, psychosis, pallor, slowed reaction time, slurred and/or nonsensical speech, and weight gain. Unfortunate accidents on the road are sometimes traced back to snoring and serious health problems from this habit, as a driver who is sleep deprived because of snoring suddenly falls asleep at the wheel, causing a terrible accident.
When you're a teenager or someone in your early twenties, staying up all night can seem almost like a triumph, like you beat the night or won some type of contest. Sometimes college students will forego sleep to get some last minute studying in. However, when you're no longer a kid, going without sleep on a regular basis, snoring, and serious health problems are something that you will need to acknowledge and deal with. It might be "cool" to show up for a college class disheveled and unkempt, but it's not cool to show up at a board meeting looking like Keith Richards.
Apart from how your coworkers might view you, the long-term consequences of insomnia such as those listed above can have devastating effects, not just on you but on those who are trying to sleep in the same bed as you.
Snoring and serious health problems can be treated, either with home remedies, over the counter or easily available merchandise from your local pharmacy, or with medical intervention. There really is no good excuse to ignore snoring, and the effect it can have on the health of you and your loved ones.
