Sneaky Pests - Three Most Unexpected Ways on How Bedbugs Get to Homes and How to Avoid Them

Expert Author Tina Schwartz-Miller

Where else can bedbugs the come from?

Bedbugs do not just come out of nowhere - there should be a "vector" that enables them to move from one place to another in order to infest other people's homes. Bedbugs are very small and unlike lice, they are not very mobile. Thus, they move from place to place by clinging onto something else. Thus, here are the top three things (or people) that they love to cling on.

Where do I get them?

The first on the list is clothes and luggage. Bed bugs can cling onto your clothes when you go to places that may already be infested by bedbugs like movie houses whose recliner seats are usually made of fabric or leather. These "other places" share one thing in common - they are often away from direct sunlight, visited often by people, damp and have many crevices where bedbugs can hide.

The second on the list is new upholstered furniture. It is not common for furniture to sit inside a showroom for months before it gets sold. This becomes a problem especially in the United States as furniture stores often allow their customers to try to feel their product - the customers literally lie on the bed, sit on a couch, etc. While this practice is acceptable on an economic point of view, this same practice exposes other people - especially the person who ends up buying the product - to more health risks.

The third on the list is quite obvious - house visitors. Some visitors might come from a bedbug infested home or, in worse cases, from a bedbug infested community. They might have also gone to other houses with bedbug in them, making it likely that their belongings might have a bedbug or two hidden underneath.

What do I do?

Of course, spraying insecticide on your clothes and furniture all the time is over the top. Furthermore, disinfecting people that come to your doorstep can be offensive. But then, it does not erase the reality that bedbugs may be there. Thus, it is important to may your home bedbug-unfriendly, or a place where bedbugs would rather not be in. Using repellant agents is a very good idea. However, be sure to use organic repellents as much as possible, to avoid health risks.

Bugs and Tina are not a good combination. Her favorite ways to get rid of bedbugs are the totally safe and all natural diatomaceous earth and cedar oil!
