Small Budget, Big Profit - How Small Business Can Profit From Online Business on a Shoestring Budget

Expert Author Fred Joshua

Recently, a client of mine approached me for an Information Technology solution for his online business. He wanted to set up an internet marketing business with membership, subscriptions and recurrent payment plans.

The first question I asked him was what his budget was, unknown to me, my friend had spent 4 weeks carrying out laborious research online in order to ascertain which companies would give him value for money. He went from company to company, submitting his proposal and waiting sometimes up to 3 to 4 days for quotations. The quotations as you can imagine had wide margins because apparently, there are many I. T. professionals and the so called geeks who would use technical terms in order to charge their unsuspecting client an arm and a leg.

After listening to my friend talk for a while, I realized that none of these professionals were really interested in his welfare, no body was really telling him the truth such as; it is expensive to build a decent system from the scratch, even though you will own the rights to the system, if what you are trying to build is not a unique solution that can be patented, then it is needless to reinvent the wheels as popular saying goes, good programmers do not write codes from scratch.

Secondly was the issue of maintenance, if a company builds a system from scratch for you, that means you will most likely rely on them for maintenance. You cannot for instance search for solutions online if you have a bug on your code because your code is unique to you.

Thirdly and very critical is the issue of security. Many people do not realize how complicated the issue of security is becoming by day. Technology is advancing very rapidly to an extent that even novice can make use of free software available online to hack into a system.

That means you can not choose your web or system developer based on price alone, if they are careless in their development, coding and testing and leave a vulnerability in your system, this could result in hackers gaining entry into your system through remote attack such as SQL Injection. If you store customers' personal information (like my friend), you could be held responsible for breach of data protection act as well as losing your most valuable asset; your customers. You could sue the development company, but the legal system has too many loopholes and if you outsourced the work to a company abroad, you will most likely not go far.

So what solution did I give my friend? I am glad you asked. Catch me in my next article as I lay down strategies on how small businesses can profit from technology on a shoes string budget
