Sledding is often credited as one of the oldest winter sports in existence. Many people think that sledding is just for children. However, imagine the fun of bouncing up and down as you race down the side of a snow covered hill with the wind whipping in your face. Why does that have to be a joy that you can no longer experience once you hit adulthood? Well it shouldn't be! If you haven't gone sledding since you were a little kid and first found excitement when you looked out your window and saw a blanket of white covering the ground, now is the time. Declare it a snow day and head to the nearest hill.
There are a few different types of sleds that you can use to play. The most basic one is called a straight running sled. It is generally made of plastic and is flat and easy to steer. There are even some that comes with steering wheels and brakes. Another type, and possibly the most recognized is the steel runner sled. These are made of wood and metal and have been around for a very long time. Another type is called a saucer sled. This type of sled allows you to spin and turn. They don't however let you steer so you will need to be extremely careful. Snow tubes can also be used instead of a sled. They are round and filled with air and can double in a pool or lake during the summer. Much like saucer sleds, you do not have a lot of control so be extra careful where you will be sledding or tubing. Be careful not to overfill the tubes, if they have too much air in them they may burst.
Being safe is one of the most important aspects of sledding. Make sure you choose an area that will not lead you into danger. I always find it amazing when I see families sledding down the side of the parkway. If you lose control, you will end up in oncoming traffic, putting yourself and everyone on the road in danger. Be smart about where you sled and you can have a ball! It may sound like common sense, but also make sure that you are wearing appropriate clothing. Nothing can ruin a day in the snow worse then having frost bite. If you have a snowsuit or clothing for skiing or snowboarding, this is ideal. Otherwise, make sure you wear as much waterproof clothing as possible along with hats, gloves, and perhaps a scarf. Being warm will ensure that you are happy and comfortable.
