Locks were and are used for security of property. Locks have evolved from logs and boulders that were jammed against a door to hi-tech biometric locks. The first 'locks' are thought to have been invented in ancient Egypt. They consisted of pins that were used to secure a bolt on a door or gate. Since then locks have evolved and now most locks use the principle of tumblers and levers.

1. Deadbolts have been around for a long time and remain popular due to their effectiveness. A deadbolt can be added without having to change the existing locks. When selecting a deadbolt make that it is rectangular and that it reaches at least an inch into the door frame. There are two types of deadbolts - a single cylinder deadbolt and a double cylinder deadbolt. The double cylinder deadbolt requires a key from both sides and so is not used as much as the single cylinder. The single cylinder needs a key to unlock it from the outside and a knob from the inside.
2. Vertical deadbolts are very hard to pry open even with a bar. The vertical bolt is hard to pry open because the vertical bolts are hard to separate. The vertical bolt is ideal for storage sheds and apartments in high crime areas.
3. A key in knob lock offers very little protection as it can be picked with a simple credit card. This type of lock should be combined with a deadbolt for main doors or entrances. The key in knob is perfect for interior doors.
4. Chain locks are a supplementary form of protection and can be easily broken. If you are getting a chain lock make sure the screws used are long and sturdy. If not the lock will hang on the door jamb and can be broken with a push on the door.
5. Sliding bars are the most effective and jimmy/pry resistant locks. They are mounted on the center of the door and make a lot of noise when operated. These locks are great for garage and cellar doors.
6. Keyless locks are the new rage in locks. The key is electronic and can be changed frequently and easily. The only drawback to keyless locks is the price involved.
