Six Things You Can Make Your Paragraphs Do

Paragraphs can do magical things in the hands of the right wordsmith. Since you're reading a grammar checking website (instead of producing flawless prose with the help of a quality writing software), we're assuming that's not you. At least, not yet.

If you put in the work writing, you'll eventually get better. That's the truth. In the meantime, you can practice by making your paragraphs do these wonderful things the next time you're finishing up an essay for class or a report for the boss.

Make your paragraphs analyze. Subdivide the topic into parts and analyze each one individually. If the analysis for each sub-component is very short, you can throw the whole thing into one paragraph. If they're meaty enough, the sub-topics might even deserve to get their own.

Make your paragraphs compare and contrast. Your paragraphs can compare one thing to another, picking apart common or contrasting features of each as your primary focus. Use balanced sentences to intensify the effect of the comparison.

Make your paragraphs define. Terms, concepts and objects, especially unfamiliar ones, will need to be defined. You can use a paragraph to make this happen, especially to prepare the reader for a more complex discussion.

Make your paragraphs show cause. You can use your paragraph to make a claim, then follow it up with a concise explanation, showing the causes and reasons for your position.

Make your paragraphs show results. Here, you use your paragraph to detail a starting point that leads to a series of results. Explaining these results and the relationship to your topic will comprise the remainder of the paragraph.

Make your paragraphs use analogy. If you find it hard to explain an idea, use a similar but more accessible concept that drives it home. Ever heard someone explain Physics using common household items as examples? I haven't, but if you can, that's one analogy I'd probably read with gusto.
