When you're in a car accident you're pre-occupied with medical issues and the condition of your car. Am I alright? Is my car alright? Filing an accident claim is probably not going to be the most pressing issue for you after the accident. But if the vehicle damage is substantial, accident claims should be something you should focus on sooner rather than later.
Most people think that the accident claims process is complicated, but it's not if you follow these simple steps as soon as possible after the accident.
Step 1: Stay on the scene - Your version of the incident has to be told to the police for their police report. Do not, under any circumstances, except medical emergency, abandon the scene of the accident.
Step 2: Call the authorities - Inform police and medical facilities immediately. The police will examine the scene thoroughly and file a report. Note down the names of the officers. The ambulance team will take care of your injuries and recommend the course of action regarding going to the hospital or doctor. This is important information to note, for you, and when while filing any claims.
Step 3: Gather information - Remember to note the contact details of the other party involved and all witnesses of the accident. Record the license number, make and model, insurance information, VIN number, of the vehicles involved in the accident.
Step 4: Take photos, if possible - Photographs of the accident are excellent pieces of evidence when making a car accident claim. Even if the photos are from a mobile phone camera, and are not top quality, this will be very useful.
Step 5: Contact your insurance company/agent immediately - It is your responsibility and duty to inform your insurer about an accident as soon as possible after it takes place. Do not wait for them to contact you.
Step 6: Contact a car accident lawyer - An experienced lawyer is your most importantly in an accident claim. He is trained to deal with the insurance companies, third parties, and the law on your behalf. Get an expert - do not delay on this.
