Simple Fixes For A Butcher Block Cutting Board

Having a butcher block in a kitchen is a great accessory to have on hand. But, problems can arise with it warping, losing its shape or even cracking when it isn't properly cared for or changes in temperature because it is made from natural wood. Like anything made of wood, it has to be kept dry and exposure to heat limited to prolong its life. When a problem does occur, all is not lost as there are simple fixes to correct most issues.

Warping occurs because of an imbalance in the moisture between the bottom and top of a board. This can be easily remedied normally by applying oil to the concave side. When that isn't enough, plastic taped to the arched side of the board and then oil applied to the reverse side will help it get back into shape with a little time.

Cracks and splits - It is natural for wood to have some splits over time and normally that can be left as is with no worry. But when the edges crack or the splits get too large, wood filler can take care of the problem. Simply fill the areas with some wood filler and let dry. After that, you just need to sand any excess filler off and re-oil the block.

When food or liquid remains on a board for too long it can cause staining. When that occurs some sanding with lightweight sandpaper should be used and then re-oiling the board. Over time the stain will disappear into the wood grain till it is no longer noticeable.

When cutting on the board, it is important to distribute the cutting evening over the whole surface of the wood so it wears evenly. Continuously cutting in the same place will cause dents and gouges in wood. Sanding out the dents and gouges can be done though and always remember to re-oil the board when done.

There are a few problems that are because of the natural wood coloring and repair isn't needed, like dark streaks in wood. Something like that just adds a bit of character to the block. When proper care and maintenance is used, a butcher block can last a lifetime. Even when problems do occur, these quick fixes will have it back in shape fast.

If you enjoy cooking, then the butcher block is something you need. Nearly everyone has a butcher block in their kitchen, do you?
