Signs of Anxiety Attack - 7 Common Physical Symptoms of Anxiety Disorder

Expert Author Ness Dorig

When a person feels an intense and recurring apprehension, fear, and discomfort because of a situation he or she gets into, then that person shows signs of anxiety attack. Medical assistance or help is necessary especially when the attack happens frequently and is affecting his daily life. This article is going to outline 7 common physical symptoms of anxiety disorder.

1. Increased beating of the heart: This is the first physical symptom of anxiety attack. The increased palpitation of the heart is the most dangerous of all the symptoms of anxiety because of the strain given the heart to work harder in order to pump more blood to the body, especially to the arms and legs. It is a necessary danger to supply more energy to react faster than normal to any anxiety attack.

2. Churning or agitated feeling in the stomach: Because the heart supplies more oxygen to the arms and legs by pumping more blood, the brain and the stomach and other parts of the body receive less than normal supply of oxygen. (note: during emergency conditions; the brain and the stomach can survive with little oxygen)

3. Breathing is faster than normal: During the anxiety attack breathing faster is necessary to compensate for the additional oxygen and energy that is required for the arms and legs. Leg muscles tend to get tensed during the attack so it needs more oxygen and energy for movement.

4. Tight feeling on the chest: Because of the rapid breathing, the chest will feel very tight and if like does not want to accept any more air that the body needs. At times the feeling is like having someone shoving or pushing a light object or pillow into your face area.

5. Dizziness and light headed feeling: A person having anxiety attack will experience this feeling because for a brief period of time there is a lesser than normal amount of oxygen that reaches the brain. (In addition to note in item #2, the reduced amount of oxygen supplied to the the brain is just enough to produce these physical symptoms and does not cause any brain damage)

6. Increased body temperature: Because the heart pumps more blood to your arms and leg muscles, there is an increase in body temperature. And the body starts to sweat to keep a relatively normal body temperature.

7. Drying mouth, tingling sensation, fatigue and weakness: These are other physical symptoms of anxiety disorder beside the symptoms outlined above. Side effects of these symptoms may include frequent urination and diarrhea.

A person feeling an intense and recurring apprehension, fear, and discomfort because of a situation he or she gets into shows signs of anxiety attack. He or she must seek medical assistance or help immediately especially when the attack is happening frequently and is starting to affect his daily life.
