As with any sport, it is vital to learn the proper fundamentals early in life. Golf is no different, since it is so technically dependent that the golf swing must be duplicated to near perfection, time and time again. Trying to learn the game later in life would put anyone at a disadvantage. Kids and golf naturally go together, since they love to watch and copy exactly what they see on television or what a parent does. By showing a few tournaments to the child, or taking them along with you for your next round, it should peak their interest in the sport.
The next step is to find some kids golf clubs, or use some clubs from your own golf sets, and let the child learn at their own pace. If they seem to enjoy golf, maybe professional lessons should be in order. It is hard as a parent to teach your loved ones, so this job should be left to the local golf pro. While children are always excited to play golf at first, they may get bored really quick. Be sure not to punish them or get mad if they only want to play a couple holes at a time. This is normal and should be expected. By allowing them to play at their own pace, it lets them to grow into the sport and not get worn out.
If the kid really likes the game, he or she might give you some gift ideas for Christmas. A golf vacation package where the whole family goes along would be an excellent way to spend time and improve the golf game. There are many package deals out there that include room and golf for an affordable rate. Check out the specials advertised online or call your local travel agent.
After all of that, and the kid is still interested in golf, maybe a serious game plan should be made about getting him or her ready for competition. Learning the proper golf swing is hard enough, let alone getting ready to play in tournaments. Custom clubs should be thought of too as children should not use regulation length clubs, unless they are tall enough to use the clubs properly. Overall, golf is a great sport for kids to play and they should be taught the right way to do it at a young age.
