Why do you think you want to be a VA? Invariably, I get things like:
- To set my own hours
- To work from home
- So I can come and go as I please
- No one telling me what to do
All of these things are true. But then I mention the bottom line about being a VA. You are a business owner. So I take each of those items and tell them about what it is like working as a VA.
- Set your hours - you have hours that you bill and hours that you do not bill. You might work 8-10 hours a day, but only bill 4-5 of those hours, meaning you only actually get paid 5 of those hours. All the others may relate to your building and marketing your business. You have to get clients.
- Work from home - you must be structured, disciplined, and organized. There are all kinds of distractions to keep you from doing your job, friends, family, kids, laundry, whatever. If you do not set clear boundaries, nothing will get done.
- Come and go as you please - See above.
- No one telling you what to do - When you start your VA practice, one of the things you will do is have a business plan that will include standards and practices. Those are the guidelines you use to manage your business. No one is telling you what to do. But everyone will if you do not stand by your standards. You know the old saying, "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything."? Well, it certainly applies here.
Being a full-time virtual assistant is gratifying when you get to work with your ideal clients, doing things you love and add real value to your clients' businesses. Realistically, I think that only happens with persistent and consistent effort. Tell me, what do you think makes a good virtual assistant? Or what do you think it is like working as a virtual assistant?
