Should Sugar Be Right Up There With Cigarettes?

Expert Author Kathryn D Alexander

Sugar is given to us when we are young. It is in baby food, cereals, milk, snacks like pudding, jello, Popsicles, desserts, juices, soda, candy, yogurt, ketchup, barbeque sauces and spaghetti sauces. It is everywhere and in many food products. Read the food labels. You may be surprised by the number of grams per serving. Television commercials cater to children during children's programming and convince kids that products with sugar are healthy and good for them. We are brainwashed and manipulated at young ages. How many times did we hear, "If you are good, you can have some candy or if you eat all your dinner, you can have dessert?" Sugar and sugar products have become the norm in many households. Grocery stores are notorious for manipulating children's minds. Candy and sugar products are strategically placed at children's eye level. This marketing ploy gets children to beg, cry and whine until our overworked nerves can't handle the noise or embarrassment and we cave into the pleading. Companies know how to work the system and our children.

But putting all kidding aside, how can this saturation of sugar be okay. Child obesity, child diabetes is growing out of control. How is feeding kids all this sugar any better than smoking a cigarette by them? Why doesn't our U. S. Department of Food, Health and Safety crack down on the unhealthiness of sugar and request warning labels or take it off the store shelves altogether? If we are so concerned with the rising costs of insurance, we should have our children eating healthy. Not feeding children healthy meals should be considered a form of child abuse. Establishing good eating habits when children are young will hopefully carry into their adulthood making healthier adults thus resulting with fewer medical problems.

Insurance companies should be involved by questioning people on their eating habits like they do with smoking. If smokers have to pay higher insurance costs, so should those people who indulge in unhealthy eating. Why is consuming sugar acceptable and smoking cigarettes is not? Everyone knows that consuming sugar causes fat which leads to being unhealthy and fat can lead to the possibility of having diabetes, heart attacks or strokes.

Is sugar addictive like cigarettes? I am guilty of consuming sugar. I wish I could drink my coffee in the morning with no sugar but I still consume at least 3 teaspoons per cup. Am I addicted or have my taste buds been compromised from my youth and all that penny candy we use to consume? It was a vicious cycle that people of my generation endured. We would drink soda from glass bottles, and then recycle the bottles for candy cash and more soda. We are a product of our environment so our environment needs to change. Only fruits and vegetables should be allowed at children's eye level in stores. Commercials during children's programming should be for actual healthy foods. If we want to reduce insurance costs and the need for medical care, we need to start now with these changes. Warning labels need to be placed on sugar and fat causing foods and stop advertising foods that are unhealthy. Cigarette ads are not allowed on television; let's do the same with sugar and fat causing foods. Restaurants serving sugar and fat causing meals should be required by law to provide warning verbiage next to each item on their menu that contains these substances or not allow them at all. With these changes, we should hopefully also see a positive reduction in tooth decay and dental care costs. Let's start our youth out on the right foot with healthy eating habits, let's abolish fat causing diseases. Help me spread the word with no more sugar for children, warning labels on all sugar products and establish better eating habits. Let's keep sugar products away and out of sight from our youth, let's make it illegal. Schools should serve sugar-free meals and beverages and preach only about healthy foods. We can build a new foundation going forward if we all work and stick together.
