Should AdWords Be Scared About Mobile Marketing?

The short answer is no. Whenever a big opportunity comes up in the online world, Google, (the guys who do the AdWords program), will do a couple things.

First they will consider the opportunity from a "is this the next big thing" perspective. If it is, then they might make a move on it. They'll evaluate where the online world is going and how they can be in a position to benefit from it. They also look at their competitors to see if they're doing anything in that market.

Second, they will determine if they want to buy out the major players or not to gain a foothold at or near the top of the new business segment. If they determine that there is enough potential volume of traffic to justify a buyout, they will go for it. They have very deep pockets and can do this for several companies offering large attractive buyouts whenever they please. (That's what happens when your main source of income is advertising online).

Third, they will make a short list of companies they're going to go after and make an offer to acquire them. Most of the big buyouts or company purchases you hear about today where done by Google. They deal in numbers that simply boggle the mind of the average Joe.

So should Google AdWords be worried about this mobile marketing revolution that is happening? No. They've already made some major acquisitions in purchasing admob.com and are actively seeking more companies to buy to get a large share of this relatively new market.
