Setting Up an African Tank Aquarium

Expert Author Craig Wrightson

If you are buying African Cichlids but you do not know how to set up the tank accordingly, then this is here to give you some insight and tips into how you can get started and set up an African tank for your Cichlids. Here are some important tips to get you going.

The first thing you might need to work out is the tank size that your fish will go in. This really depends on the amount of African Cichlids you will be buying. A larger amount will need a bigger tank as these fish tend to be aggressive.

The next thing to know about these fish is that they like a rocky environment with lots of caves and hiding places. African Cichlids tend to like to claim territories for their own, so it is important that if you have more than two of these fish that you need to have plenty of caves for these fish to claim as their own. If you have a big number of these fish then it is important to make more than enough caves as females tend to place their young in these to be born.

PH levels are also important for these fish to survive. The pH level depends on the type of African Cichlids that you buy. There are many different types in this family, so if you are unsure as to what levels are needed it may be best to ask the fish store that you buy them off, or do a little research on the internet for them.

A good filtration system is required when setting up an African tank. Filtration is important because it helps keep the tank clean for the fish which helps stop them from dying. Although the filtration system may be good, it is also important to do a water change on a weekly basis to ensure that the water is clean for the fish.

These fish also like a certain temperature with their water. A good heater is also something that needs to be bought when it comes to keeping these fish. The temperature of these fish can vary from the type you buy. So it may be best to ask your local store or do a little research into the temperature your particular fish will like.

As it was said before these fish tend to be fairly aggressive. So it is important that you have plenty of room to move between other fish. If you are thinking about adding other species of fish to this tank then you may need to look into what types are compatible with the water pH levels, temperatures and environment.

So if you are thinking about buying African Cichlids, then it is important to set the tank up accordingly. With the right tank set up your fish will live a happier and healthier life. But always remember that you need to make a regular water change on a weekly basis for optimal health and well being of the fish.
