Are you looking forward to or in the process of aging gracefully? I think we all hope that will be the case for us. Since September is Healthy Aging Month it is a time for you to really think about what that means for you. We all age at a different rate and we each have a different perspective about what aging is. Some of us do not mind gray hair - others of us mind it - A LOT. The same is true for skin, body shape, etc. There are some universal rules of thumb though that make the process easier and that help us stay healthier longer. Let's take a look at some of them and rate ourselves on how we are doing.
Here are some habits and behaviors of people who age healthily. You can score yourself on each by using a 1 to 5 scale where 1 means you rarely do this and 5 means you almost always do this.
- Get good, restful sleep for 8 hours a night.
- Eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
- Exercise for at least 30 minutes a day in a way that gets your heart-rate elevated.
- Nourish your skin daily to keep it from drying out.
- Use sun block when going out for a period of time in the sun.
- Limit alcohol consumption.
- Refrain from smoking.
- Take medicine only as prescribed or needed.
