Selling Articles and E-Books - Getting Noticed

Selling information online is a great way to earn a living. Of course, you will have to learn how to market your product and your writing abilities to your customers. There are countless experts who are earning money online, and they can show you how to do it. Their secret is that they know the market, and they write what sells. Your subject matter is important, but selling comes down to getting noticed first and then closing the deal.

Advertising experts tell us to repeat successful formulas with some kind of variation. This means if you are writing material that is already available in the public domain, you will have to differentiate your writing enough to make it original or improved. For example: I have a client that studied Iyengar Yoga for many years and wanted to put together a guide for her students, most of whom were older men and women who couldn't manage many of the more advanced Yoga postures. With my help, we developed a guide that approximated many of the postures from her original training and produced a very similar Yoga system for older students. It wasn't a huge national bestseller, but the variation proved valuable and sold well to her students and others interested in an easier regimen.

My specialty is helping my students write for the Internet and magazines. To get noticed, one must be provocative and original while still following familiar writing formats. Law students apply this approach when writing for legal journals. Writing very provocative and activist essays can get one published in a law journal when a strictly academic piece can be rejected. British tabloids hire writers that are skilled at coming up with shocking but catchy headlines that grab the reader's attention and even perhaps provoke a laugh.

Making money by selling your writing online is no different. You must be exciting and provocative. If you aren't grabbing your reader's attention, then your subject matter won't be an issue. Excite your visitors, present some interesting or unique angle, and whether you are selling recipes or tips to improve your earnings, you'll have much better success.
