Self-Help Techniques For Irritable Bowel Syndrome

For many individuals who have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, the symptoms of this condition can be very challenging on a daily basis due to the fact that there is no known cause or cure and not many medications are available that can effectively treat all of the symptoms.

However, many individuals have found relief through self-help techniques that have been effective in relieving their painful symptoms of gas, constipation, bloating, and diarrhea. Some of these self-help techniques involve dietary supplements and caution should be taken before starting any new alternative form of treatment by consulting with your primary care physician as some of these supplements have been known to cause serious side effects in individuals who are susceptible.

Avoid the Foods that can cause the Symptoms of IBS

One of the primary ways in which many individuals help themselves to avoid the triggers of their symptoms of IBS is to determine what foods bother them specifically by keeping a food diary and looking for a pattern that may indicate an issue with certain foods and eliminating them from there diet.

There are foods and beverages that are commonly associated with the flare up of symptoms and they include, greasy or fatty foods, red meats, foods that can cause gas such as cabbage, beans, and broccoli and carbonated or alcoholic beverages.

Heat and Aromatherapy

Many individuals' symptoms of IBS are triggered by anxiety and stress and find that certain relaxation techniques including aromatherapy beneficial in reducing their flare ups and symptoms.

The scent of lavender is known to have a soothing and relaxing effect on the body and can be found in many types of aromatherapy candles as well as bath oils and soaps. Heat therapy has also been effective in some individuals for relieving the spasms of the colon that trigger the symptoms of pain, diarrhea or constipation.

Heat therapy methods can include a sauna, warm Jacuzzi, or steam bath. Heat wraps that go around the abdomen also help many individuals experience relief from their symptoms during the day as they can be worn underneath the clothes and many can last up to eight hours. Hot oil treatments are also an effective form of heat therapy and work well when combined with aromatherapy.

Meditation and Yoga

Another relaxation technique that many individuals with IBS find helpful is meditation that includes breathing relaxation and can be self-taught or taught by a professional that specializes in these techniques for patients with IBS. Exercise and yoga are also effective ways to relieve the stress that can be a trigger of IBS symptoms.

One of the best things that you can do if you suffer from IBS is to educate yourself as much as you can about this condition by talking with you physician and reading all that you can including the many pamphlets and books that are available on irritable bowel syndrome.
