Self Discipline - Climb Back on the Horse

Expert Author Mike Bond

Self Discipline Works

Without self discipline, we can never know success. All we'll experience will be a fuzzy, rudderless mediocrity. The knowledge that we have self discipline builds up our self confidence and increases our likelihood of completing a task, thereby giving us satisfaction.

Sometimes it's necessary that we be stretched, for without periodical extension, when a time comes for us to do something we dislike, then like any unused rubber band, we'll snap.

Self Discipline Over Depression

Over the past few decades, cases of depression and suicide have shot through the roof. An interesting fact is that at the start of the Second World War, when Winston Churchill could offer us nothing but; 'blood, sweat and tears,' both depression and suicide dropped to virtually zero.

There was no such thing as not going to work 'because I don't feel like it.' Everybody 'did their bit,' and 'dug for victory.' Corny? Well, if you call winning the war at home through sheer bloody minded determination and self discipline 'corny,' then guilty as charged.

But the American, British and other allied forces were going through bloody murder abroad, so we sure as hell weren't going to let them down.

I remember the signs the Londoners put up when they were bombed out of their shops; "More Open Than Usual," and they carried on business.. as usual.

Nowadays, if a shop's blown in by a hurricane, a howling mob of human vermin descends on it and loots it. If they'd tried that during the war years, they'd have died, very quickly.

Discipline on Television

I don't watch much TV, but there was a show from England a few years ago, and I know the same types of show are on over here, where a bunch of delinquents were put into the same situation as we were in the old National Service days.

Now, this was voluntary. I forget now how many there were; I think around thirty. If they really couldn't make it, or were certain they wanted to leave the programme, then nothing was stopping them.

It was an eight week basic training course, and the difference at the end from the beginning was quite remarkable, even down to a few of them actually joining the army. In eight weeks, they learned self discipline and you felt really proud for them. I think there were only three who left.

Preferences and Benefits

For the depressed person, there's no doubt that exercise is the quickest way of raising the serotonin levels. (You know. The 'Feel Good' neurotransmitter). I know that exercise was the last thing I wanted to do during my depressive session. But putting short term preferences before long term benefits isn't going to make you better.

Mark you, someone who's deeply depressed will have to recover quite a bit first before they're even physically capable of exercise. But if you don't want to do it, then just do it.

Okay chaps, rant over!
