Selecting Popular Hymns For Church Weddings

Expert Author David P Gibson

Hymns used in a church wedding must be familiar to your guests so that they would be able to participate in the singing. It is easier to use familiar hymns because every generation will be able to join in without reservation. Hymns are usually written in a songbook but if your favorite hymn is not in the standard repertoire, you can ask for approval from the marriage celebrant, this is vitally important to ensure that the guidelines of appropriate music set by the church are upheld. Popular hymns are usually easy to sing because of the melody and the lyrics. Some hymns that are popular at weddings include, Amazing Grace, Jerusalem, Lord of the Dance, Make me a Channel of your Peace, O Lord my God, and The Lord is my Shepherd. These hymns are easily available in most church hymnals.

Popular hymns like these are favorites of all generation therefore you must prepare a song book for the guests. Although some guests will be familiar with these songs remembering lyrics can be challenging, it is also always polite to be respectful that not everyone is from the same faith background, by providing words you are being inclusive of these people in your ceremony. Make sure also that the hymns for wedding are suited to all voices ranges. If it is too high, the tendency of the guests is to keep silent or even worst, shout just to reach the high pitch.

The hymns being used in your wedding ceremony need to be well rehearsed and planned in advance, it is not just a matter of selecting the songs being used and then leaving it up to chance. You should listen to them as they practice so that you will be able to give your own suggestions on how the song will be performed. The decisions as to what hymns to be used should be made well in advance to allow adequate time for all the music to be prepared to an excellent standard.

Hymns are played in weddings at specific times for specific purposes, when selecting your hymns you need to always be mindful of this. Hymns are played in the beginning of the service, after the wedding ceremony, the gift giving, the communion, and the recessional. If you have any queries as to what style of hymn would be appropriate at a certain time in your wedding ceremony make sure you ask the advice of the celebrant, musical director or music organiser.
