Secrets Of Fighting Diabetes During The Summer

Expert Author Theresa Newell

What are the secrets of defeating diabetes during the summer? Summer brings its own unique challenges. Warm weather tempts us to drink refreshing drinks (which are usually high in sugar content). Families and friends tend to find more occasions to socialize and eat together. Many of us cook out more frequently and this, more often than not, includes high fat foods (hamburgers, pork ribs, etc.) Here are five (5) tips that are working for me.

1. PLAN -- Have a plan. Identify potential food and drink challenges and set up a routine for reducing or avoiding their impact.

2. PREPARE -- If you enjoy refreshing, tasty, sweet drinks have something already prepared in your refrigerator. Many options are available, ie. fruit smoothie, unsweetened ice tea pushed up a notch with a mint leave, slice of lemon, etc. Plan cook outs that provide vegetable and chicken items, including fresh fruit desserts, etc.

3. IMPLEMENT -- Have available alternative choices for high carb and high fat options. Drink lots of water and limited amounts of alcohol. Ice water with a twist of lemon (no sugar) can be very refreshing.

4. ALLOW --Allow (include in plan) times when it is okay to indulge in items not normally part of the plan.

5. FORGIVE -- Forgive yourself. If you fall off the wagon forgive yourself and get right back on.

Have a great day. Leave me a comment sharing your recipes and/or suggestions for beverages and menus that will not aggravate our diabetes.
