Search Spiders - Making Sure That They Understand Your Site

Expert Author John Derossett

Most people don't realize that a search engine spider will view their site differently than a human being will. Is your code clean enough that the search spiders can properly understand it? A webpage that has all the bells whistles and appeals to the human eye means absolutely nothing to a search engine spider. If you have an image with some text on it, the spiders do not see that. Likewise they are unable to see any text that is embedded within a flash movie.

Getting beyond those two facts you also need to know the spider is unable to understand web languages at all including javascript or even CSS. So, just because you have a fantastic website doesn't mean you're going to get good placement in the engines regardless of what type of content is included within the pages.

To summarize things for you a bit, the following list of formats are unable to be understood or read by the search engine spiders, so when you are optimizing your website for those search engines you need to keep this information in mind:

  • Images. The spider does not know what is in that image, so if you are using one to "tell" people something, the spiders will not pick up that useful bit of information. This has been provided for in your SEO tactics - Use your image alt tags to put that bit of information in there.
  • Flash Movies, banners and other flash type elements such as menus are unable to be read by the search engine spider. They look pretty but to the search spider they are essentially worthless. Make sure that you have a sitemap on your site that is linked from the home page.
  • Javascript and other languages are useful in keeping the code count down on a given page and actually help things to load faster, but they are quite useless in the SEO game because the search engine spider can't read them.
  • Other multimedia file formats are also a problem for them as well. They cannot read what is contained within them so anything important contained within these files if virtually useless for SEO purposes.

While it is true that some of the spiders can index some of this stuff, the truth is that you will never gain very high rankings because of the use of them if your main content is included within these languages.

If you use a lot of images on your website be sure that you include many pages of written content. Using a search engine spider simulator can help you to see what the search spiders see. These types of tools mimic what a search engine spider sees when it comes to your website.
