Sculpting a Reborn Baby Doll Kit

The easiest and most common form of sculpting to create a mold for vinyl reborn kits is to start with a basic head form. These are available online and are a base model that can be used to then add your sculpting materials over the top and begin to add definition and features to make your own unique sculpt. You will need a variety of sculpting tools, a pasta machine to push through your sculpting clay into thin pliable sheets that you can then cut into smaller rectangles and place evenly over the base template. Taking your first sheet of clay, create a piece big enough to stretch over the front of the form, from the top of the head to base of the neck and gently press it into shape, using your clay like puzzle pieces. Then add more rectangles to the sides and back of the head, ensuring you cut off any rough edges, then pressing each piece together to create a seamless mold you can now work with. Next you can begin to add a layer of aged super sculpey. This is easier to work with as it's more pliable and not so soft. Layer this the same way you have with your initial clay layer and gently press into place making sure to keep edges neat and seamless.

Once happy with your base layer, you can create an open eyed baby. Take your palette knife and gently slice through the middle horizontally across the eye, gently pushing it open slightly with a nice tapered edge, keeping in mind that both need to be the same width and position. Now take your flat chisel tool and carefully open the eye to the desired shape keeping edges smooth. Gently press over the eye to open, adding definition to the eyelid with an extra fold. Moving on to the nostrils, when sculpting the outside nose area you need to make sure they are perfectly symmetrical. It is very important to do a little on each side at a time so you can even them up as you work. You can now begin to take smaller pieces of your sculpey, adding it to lip and chin areas, lightly molding with your flat chisel into the desired shape. Taking a hot dog sized piece, place around the ear area to create the ear and lobe then gently press into the shape of ear you are happy with. Using a base sculpting form enables sculptors to take out some of the hard work and focus on creating amazingly lifelike detail in their sculpt.
