Scrapbooking - 4 Step Process to Create Stunning Pages

Many people ask me what is the best way to create a scrapbook page from scratch? Well, there are lots of answers to this question. The truly best way to create stunning pages is to plan. That's right PLAN! Planning is the key to developing beautiful scrapbook pages. Please enjoy my basic 4 step process to creating fantastic scrapbook pages.

Step 1: Select Photographs

When you are getting ready to create a scrapbook page, whether on paper or on the computer, you should first decide which of your pictures you want to use. The photographs you select to work with will often have a theme within them. For instance, photos of your daughters first dance recital or your sons winning soccer game, definitely sets a theme suitable for a one or two page layout or possibly more depending on how many pictures you wish to use.

Step 2: Determine Theme or Color Palette

Once you have your photographs selected, you should take a critical look at them to determine if they have an underlying theme. Are they all pictures from a trip to the zoo? Or are they all baby pictures of your children? Perhaps, they are pictures of a special relative or a momentous event. Maybe they are just pictures of a regular afternoon. Whatever, the photographs depict, they will almost always have an underlying theme or colors that standout from the photographs. You can choose to create the pages with the underlying theme (for the zoo trip-you can use zoo animals embellishments and papers) or you can look at the colors in the pictures or choose your favorite colors to commemorate your photos your way.

Step 3: Plan your Layout (especially if you are using traditional scrapbooking)

Next, you will need to determine how you wish to layout the photographs. In general, you want to focus on 1 to 5 photographs per page, anything more than that can be confusing for the viewers. This is especially important for traditional scrapbooking, because if you skip this step and just start gluing your photos on, you are highly likely to end up with pages you don't like and photos that cannot be reused.

Step 4: Put it All Together

You have the photographs, have determined your theme and/ or color palette, and have decided on the layout. Now it is time to put it all together. Be creative and have fun. The planning you have done will help you complete your pages fairly quickly with great results.

This 4 step process is the best way I have developed for creating beautiful scrapbook pages. Although I tend to create primarily digital layouts anymore, these tips will work with both digital scrapbooking and traditional paper scrapbooking. For digital scrapbooking, the concerns over planning the layout are less major because you can simply move the element or photo at any time. For digital or computer scrappers, the main benefit of using scrapbook sketches is the fact that it will save you a lot of time in the long run and help prevent you from experiencing the dreaded "scrappers block."
