Like an artist, a scrapbooker must get inspired. For some it's a picture or an event, others are inspired by aisles in a scrapbook supply store or listening to their favorite song. Remember Our album is the art gallery and the blank pages are the canvas. We have piles of pictures, stacks of card-stock and several containers holding ribbon, stickers, stamps and other scrapping material - the possibilities are endless and the question is where to start?
Several scrapbooks later I scrapped up the answer to this frustrating question - use scrapbook sketches aka layouts!
Many scrapbookers run into what I call a page block, you know the times when you stare blankly at a page and come up with nothing. I know personally I have spent several hours moving elements of the page around, changing the placement of my pictures and the only thing I achieve is frustration. Sound familiar?
Some friends I scrap book with have turned to quick pages also known as scrapbook templates. I call this "Microwave Generation Scrapbooking". Pre designed pages- you add a photo and go. Being a wife and a mom of three beautiful girls you would think I would embrace this new idea of scrapbooking, it takes little effort and little time, but it throws the concept of scrapbooking completely out if you ask me...
Call me old school I appreciate the creative side of scrapbooking. The one that allows me to create my Van Gogh, my Mona Lisa, be an MC Escher. Scrapbook sketches provide a map for me to follow and yet the end result (scrapbook layout) that I created varies greatly from someone who followed the same map.
Unlike the scrapbook template where the only difference is usually the pictures.
Ever since I experienced the ease and time-saved using scrapbook sketches, I hardly scrap without one. All I have to do is to select an appropriate sketch, then pick out my photos, papers and embellishments and scrap accordingly to the scrapbooking layout ideas used... It's amazing I notice I actually scrap "better" this way, maybe it's because I feel more confident and less frustrated.
Hand Drawn sketches or black and white digital sketches (layouts) allow me to see the Big Picture, cutting picture placement out and yet still allowing me to use my imagination and add personal touch. No more guessing, no more frustration.
Anyone can put pictures in a book but a scrapbook made with love holds those pictures and tells a story. It brings memories alive!
