The capital of Scotland is the city of Edinburgh and which is looked over by its Castle. The actual city, which now surrounds it, did not come into being until the latter part of the 18th Century when the English Kings felt that they now had control over the area.

The actual city you see below today was designed around a set of squares and was designed by James Craig. Although extremely classical, the design of the city is still undeniably and certainly recognizable as being Scottish.

When it comes to things to do and see in Edinburgh you will not be spoiled for choice along with the Annual Festival there is also the Edinburgh Military Tattoo that takes place each year. If however, you are keen on shopping there is plenty of places to visit on Princes Street.

Along with the Castle, which one can tour around, there are plenty of other places of interest to visit in this city. There is also John Knox's House where you can learn more about this preacher from the 16th Century who established what is now the Presbyterian Church movement. Also another place which many visitors to the city enjoy is Lady Stair's House which is a museum devoted to many of the country's most well known and loved writers, including Robbie Burns, Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson.

Another thing you may be interested in that many visitors to Edinburgh enjoy is the Ghost Tours. This allows you the chance to discover more of what lies under the city and learn more about some of the cities more illustrious characters such as Burke and Hare.

For more information visit the Capital of Scotland and also check out the Things to do in Glasgow if you also want to visit Scotland's second city.
