There has never been a better time to know what you're doing clothes wise. Knowing your colouring and the shape of your body will save you pounds in unworn clothes and keep you looking good through the lean times.
So, let's presume the colouring is sorted and that you are confidently choosing colours which will suit you and you are making good use of all your neutral shades, how can knowing your own style help? The answer is simple, it means that you can look at the shape of items of clothing and decide, whilst they're still on the hanger, whether or not there is a good likelihood of them suiting you. This saves time and aggravation when shopping and means you don't waist precious energy trying on heaps of things that will not suit you. Even the most dedicated shoppers know that trying on can be exhausting.
How to dress your body successfully is to make sure that you know everything there is to know about your shape. For example you may give a straight bodied appearance with very little curve to your body, you may have flat hips and no waist. This will mean that items that are tailored and hang straight with very little shaping will look good on your particular body. For you the sheaf style dress is a godsend. Conversely you may have a very curvy body with a definite hourglass shape where it is obvious you have a waist, boobs and curvy hips. For you items with shaping which show your figure are wonderful and it is great to show off a small waist with style details or belts. In fact knowing your shape even impacts on the type of fabric you look best in and those with hourglass shapes know that jerseys and soft woollens can look wonderful.
Identifying your shape is very useful but let's face it, it can be confusing, you can look at your body and think - well I could be straight but I'm carrying some weight - perhaps I'm round, in which case the advice is different and the whole thing starts to get complicated. If this is you, don't worry, there are other things which it helps to know like whether you are in proportion or have a high waist or a low waist. This is of great assistance as it helps with where to put the detail on your outfits. People with high waists tend to find they are better in longer jackets and skirts and little waist emphasis, whereas those with long waists generally look good in shorter jackets and skirts and can use detail in the waist area.
People with proportioned bodies where the waist falls where it should do and not just under the boobs or near the hips are luckier in the style stakes and the lengths of their skirts and jackets can depend on height and personal preference.
And as for trousers - a perennial issue for women is getting the best style of trouser that's available at the time and everyone with a high waist has breathed a sigh of pleasure because trousers that actually fit on the waist are back in the shops- no more constantly tugging at the waist to see if they will come up a bit. You long- waisted folk have had it all your own way for far too long but there are still plenty of hipsters out there for you. Indeed, one of the latest styles for the young are jeans with about ten centimetres of material from crotch to waistband and the tiniest zip imaginable. My advice to anyone over a size ten and the other side of forty is don't go there!
The beauty of having knowledge of what suits you is manifold, you always dress in the best colours and styles and you wear your clothes rather than the reverse, but one of the chief benefits in a credit crunch is that the items you buy are of value to you and make you look good - so you can buy less expensive items if you need to, but know that they will still look good on you, or you can buy an expensive item with confidence and of course you can do spectacularly well in the sales - buying up items like knitwear and coats which don't date and saving a fortune on the full price.
