Save Money by Planting Your Own Garden

Many people have asked themselves if it is really possible to save money by planting your own garden. Is the savings enough to justify the time and effort that are put into that garden? More and more people are starting their own gardens. They hear about the benefits to their health, the savings on food bills, and the potential profits of selling the food that they have produced. The results of these efforts are showing that it is very cost effective to start a garden and start growing some of your own food. However, there are still some people that say that the time, effort, cost of seeds and materials, and plants to get started are a waste of money. More and more of these people are being proven wrong on a daily basis.

When you are starting a garden, there are ways to spend more money or save more money. First of all, if you do the soil preparation by hand, you are going to save money. Many people go out and buy a tiller. This is actually a waste of money. Yes, it is harder to do the work by hand, but it is cheaper. If you have no desire to prepare your soil by hand, consider renting a tiller for the day. This is a lot cheaper than going out and buying one that you are not going to use very often and it is just going to sit and collect dust.

Once the ground is ready, you can buy your seeds. Some people choose to buy expensive, fancy seeds or to buy starter plants. These are all a waste of money in most cases. Unless you are looking at showing your crops, searching for a specific variety of plant, or are looking for plants that are very high yield, you can save yourself a lot of money by going to your local home improvement or home and garden store and purchasing seeds. They are much cheaper and you will get the same results. No matter what kind of seed you plant, you are going to get the same food in the end. If you want to have your plants off to a good start by planting time, start them in your house in the winter. You can get old butter tubs and yogurt containers all year long. Then, you simply plant your seeds in them in the winter. By the time you can plant in the spring, you have starter plants that are already well on their way to producing wonderful food for you.

You can buy cheap dirt that works just as well as the more expensive types. You can also get some cheap fencing to put around your garden. This will keep pests out and protect your plants. You will not have to worry about waking up one morning and finding that all of your plants have been eaten. These pests can drastically reduce your income and savings if you do not have the proper fencing in place to keep them out.

The main thing with starting a garden is to be economical about it. This is the best way to see the true savings that you will get. If you buy the fancy, expensive stuff, you are going to end up losing money instead of saving money. In the long run, a garden will decrease your food bill. You will pay less for setting up and maintaining your garden then what you would if you went to the grocery store and bought the food. Over time, you will see that you have more and more money saved up. Food that you have an excess of can be sold for a profit. Or, you can freeze the food and save it for the next year. This will start your money savings when the next year starts and you already have the food ready to go.
