Sandpit Care

Sandpits are a popular choice for backyard play equipment for families with toddlers. However they will need to be properly cared for and maintained in order to provide your children with a safe, clean environment as well has increasing the useful life of the sandpit itself.

Problems in sandpits can emerge when children, pets and other animals use them as toilets. After heavy rain sandpits can be inundated with water and if left alone for a period of time these problems can lead to growth of bacteria, fungi and the sandpit could become a breeding ground for insects. Hence it is essential to keep sandpits clean and hygienic.

A good method of keeping your sandpit clean would be to cover it when not in use. Appropriate covers vary from wire mesh, hard covers and permeable plastic sheets. However the most suitable sand pit covers would be the wire mesh and other permeable covers as they allow the sand to be aerated, preventing moisture build up. Be aware that water will also be able to get into the pit if a permeable cover is used. So you should have an appropriate drainage system at the bottom of the pit.

Cleaning the sand pit can include things such as raking the sand pit, which will remove rubbish, leaves and twigs and also help to aerate the sand. On occasion you might be required to disinfect the sandpit. For example this would be required if a child or animal does a poo in the sandpit or it is very dirty. To disinfect the sandpit you will need to empty out the sandpit first and then use bleach or other household detergent diluted with water to clean the box. After checking that the sand is also clean and when the box has dried, the sandpit can be filled and ready to be used once again.
