Once upon a time, in a neighborhood not so far away, Samuel was riding his bike when he heard his mom calling, "Samuuueeellll, come home for suuuuppppeeerr." Mmmm, we're having spaghetti tonight, Samuel thought to himself. So he went straight home, parked his bike, and went to wash his hands. No hesitation on spaghetti night. Mom made the best spaghetti in the world.
Samuel hurried to the table, "Let's say grace" He said, knowing you couldn't eat without blessing the food. "God is great. God is good. Let us thank him for this food. By his hands we shall be fed. Give us Lord our daily bread. Amen" Samuel said with confidence.
"Thanks mom for the spaghetti. It's my favorite" Samuel muttered with a meatball in his jaw. Mom said, " You are so welcome, Son." Samuel always thanked his mom. She was the best cook in the world.
"Your dad and I have a surprise for you." Mom said smiling.
"Surprise:? Oh boy, I love surprises". Samuel said as he swallowed his fifth meatball.
"Your dad and I think you may be old enough for a cell phone" Mom grinned and said.
OH BOY! OH BOY! OH MY! MOM, DAD, I CAN'T BELIEVE IT. I'M ONLY 10. THIS IS THE BEST NEWS IN THE WORLD." Samuel screamed ecstatically.
Dad gave the phone to Samuel. Samuel looked at the phone in amazement smiling from ear to ear. "There is a lot of responsibility of having a cell phone Son" dad said with that stern voice.
"Yeah Dad, I know" Samuel said. "Can you show me how it works?"
"Sure son" Dad answered as he showed Samuel how to call Mom and Grandma and how to call 911 for help, in case of an emergency. "This is the greatest surprise, ever, Mom and Dad. Thank you so much!" Samuel said as he gave them the biggest hug ever.
"There is also a way to write notes." Dad said, "It's called texting" Dad showed Samuel how to text short notes to Mom like I love you and I've got to stay after school today. Samuel was so happy that he could send Mom a note.
Later that night, Samuel texted Mom. "I'm ready for my bedtime story" Mom thought it was so cute that he had texted her.
Dad and Mom told Samuel a story and tucked him in so tightly. "Sweet dreams" they said as they turned out the lights.
Samuel went right to sleep, anticipating the morning, almost like Christmas, so he could use his new phone.
The next morning, Samuel jumped right out of bed, and hurried to get to breakfast. He called his mom, "hello", she said. "hey Mom, I just wanted to say good morning and I'll be right down for breakfast" "Ok Samuel, Love you" she said giggling.
At breakfast, Dad reminded Samuel of the responsibility's of a cell phone. Dad also warned of texting while walking or riding his bike. "Be sure, whenever your are texting, that you are not moving. It's dangerous. Always stop to text" his dad said.
"Sure thing" Samuel winked at his dad.
Samuel went out to walk Gus, his dog. As he was walking, he saw Ms. Foster checking her mail. "good morning, Ms. Foster" Samuel greeted. "Well hello Samuel. It's a nice day". She replied. "I got a new cell phone" Samuel showed her his surprise. "That's nice, Samuel. Tell your mother thank you for the pie. It was delicious." She said. "I will, Goodbye." Samuel said as he ran to keep up with Gus. I can text Mom, he thought to himself as he pulled out the phone, opened it and began texting. Gus eagerly pulled at his leash trying to get a glimpse of the squirrel behind the tree. When all of a sudden, THUMP! Samuel ran right into the tree. He was too busy texting and wasn't paying attention just as Dad had warned him. "OH MY HEAD!" He yelled. Samuel realized what had happened. He looked at his arms and legs and had a few scratches. He touched his head and felt a big bump. "Oh no, I've got to tell Mom and Dad what happened".
Dad was right. This cell phone is a lot of responsibility. From now on, I will always stop to text or talk. If I had been on my bike, I could get hurt really bad.
Samuel went home and told his Mom and Dad the lesson he learned. Mom told him what she had learned about the "No phone Zone." Samuel thought it was funny and ran through the yard yelling, "NO PHONE ZONE, NO PHONE ZONE! HAHAHA!" Samuel understood exactly what that meant and he had a bump on his head to remind him. "Let's all join the No Phone Zone Club," Dad said. "Yay! Can my friends join to?' Samuel asked. Dad nodded and gave Samuel a hug. "That'll be great Son. Everyone should join. I love you." Samuel beaming with pride, "I love you too Dad."
