Salts Recommended for Use With the Neti Pot

Expert Author Tommy Kas

After looking at various web sites on the net I started getting confused due to the contradictory comments by various individuals as to which type of salt is best for use for nasal irrigation. It is ideal that put salt should be used, but I felt it would be helpful to list a few of the different kinds of salts available in the stores and their suitability for use in Nose rinsing. It is best to do a research on these before you decide to stop purchasing the already premixed nasal rinses, as your nose is a very and delicate body part which has to be treated as such. There are alternatives which you can safely use, and I am very glad to see you seeking that information as this guide will definitely help.

- Table Salt. This type of salt is finely ground cooking salt with a free flowing agent added to it in order to stop it from lumping up in the salt shaker during prolonged storage. Why would you want to put aluminum, silicone or iodine up your nostrils? It can be used without much harm, but can cause some discomfort as is not recommended.

- Cooking or Pickling Salt. This is usually the same as pure sea salt, but do check the package for details. It can vary in coarseness and the finer strands are better for even and prompt dissolving in the water. It is possible to grind it on your own if it cannot be found that way in the stores, and should be stored in airtight containers to avoid lumping due to humidity. I have found it in health stores ready for use with the Neti.

- Vegetable Salt. This salt should never be used in your nose as it is a compound mixture of herb, spices and salt which will wreck damage to your sinuses.

- Rock Salt. These are usually very big and hard and depending on origin contain numerous minerals within them making them not appropriate for Neti Pots. They require a salt cellar, and are better left for cooking with.

- Macrobiotic Salt. This is typically imported from Japan which makes it quite expensive. It is often grayish in color and may be used with the Neti without any harmful side effects.
