Even when you're bent on matters of official business like negotiating for a salary increase or requesting for additional office equipment, like we said, you can walk away with getting a raise and getting what you want the easy way.
However, there are certain things you can't get away with, and office politics happens to be one of them. Gossips and intrigues tend to manipulate people and events to whoever's liking, but they never lead to any good when it comes to requesting for a salary increase which is well-deserved.
With all due respect to your boss as your superior at work, there are certain rules to follow and we can express them as serious dont's. Difficult as they are to resist, they are your easy ways to getting a pay raise settled and approved.
Without further ado, here are 2 main rules to follow:
DON'T rely on the grapevine. Do not discuss your pay issues with a colleague and hope that the boss gets to hear all about it. News has its way of reaching the nooks and corners of an office, but it sometimes stops at the boss' door unless someone gives it a nudge. Who better to bring it in that you as the main person concerned? Besides, the juicier the news gets the better or worse it becomes, so your boss may be getting all the wrong, inaccurate details from his receiving end. Why be modest and discuss your pay woes in secret, when you can speak up on your concerns as a professional? Do give your boss the benefit of the doubt. You might get approved.
DON'T play victim. Ordinary people love the drama of unrequited love, but serious workers should avoid the drama of unappreciated efforts and uncompensated jobs. It only encourages the vicious cycle of complaints and feelings of discontent. Pity would be the last thing you would like others to feel for you. Where's your fighting spirit, when you can have appreciation and recognition for your work instead? With the right time and approach and under the right forum and venue, there's no reason for you to end up a victim: a loser. Do look at yourself as a winner!
