Romancing the Trout (Night Trout Fishing)

Ahhh... the mystery and intrigue of night trout fishing! All the landscape lit by the light of the moon and calmness of the waters make just the right setting for romancing the trout right out of the water. Night trout fishing can be much more peaceful than daytime fishing. Nature's hustle and bustle has subsided, and you will rarely catch another fisherman out there either. Trout have excellent up close vision, and will hide when they have spotted an angler or boat. But, in the dark solitude and cooler waters of the night, they are more likely to come out in to open spaces in search of food. These factors alone may increase your chances of hooking a nice catch. The trout are anxiously awaiting any insects or creatures that might still be stirring, and they might be more likely to bite at your lure due to their eagerness and the lack of competing lures. But, it's not be as simple as it sounds, there are some tips to follow when night trout fishing.

You must scout out your area first. Although you will be doing your fishing at night, a day time trip is required. Of course you could use a flashlight to find your way, but this could prove to be very dangerous, especially in unfamiliar terrain. Flashlights only provide limited vision and aren't the best for securing a good fishing location. However, you should always bring a flashlight that is easily stored and not in the way. Daylight is the best resource for securing your night fishing location. Take a trip to your targeted destination in the day to find an area that you can easily cast from. Be sure to scout out the whole area, taking note of any major landmarks that will help you find your way to and from your fishing hole later. Also, with any fishing trip, it makes sense to notice the creatures of your location, to help you in selecting the best types of lures.

Some experienced anglers will argue that night trout fishing is one of the best times for trophy trout fishing and requires big lures, especially if you are aiming for brown trout that are known for being night feeders. You also have more options with night fishing lures, because color is not an issue. Choose a lure that you will be able to see well at night. One lure to try that is easy to see at night is the light colored Rooster Tails. Rooster Tails are a popular trout fishing lure. They have a small piece of animal fur on the end, which is perfect for spotting in the night. They are patterned to imitate a minnow, which is a small fish and natural prey for the trout. It is also a well known fact that the larger trout feed on small fish, making this lure ideal for attracting the larger trout. By bending the lip of this lure you can control the depth at which it will plunge. But, for night trout fishing, the rooster tail is better kept visible. Most rooster tails come in sizes of around 3 to 4 inches long.
