Rocking Horse Plans

Expert Author Lee Nunez

At some point or another, most woodworker practitioners will need rocking horse plans for their next project. Just about everybody I know who works with wood has tried their hand at building one. The rocking horse has always been, and continues to be a very fashionable woodworking project for all ages. If your thinking about what your next woodworking project should be, a rocking horse may be the perfect undertaking for you.

It has always given me great enjoyment to construct toys from wood to give to my children. It's probably been one of the greatest joys associated with woodworking that I've experienced. Lets face it; I adored my rocker as a child. Today's kids are no different.

Wood made rocking horses come in all kinds of styles, shapes, and sizes. I've seen plans that only the most experienced woodworkers should attempt. While other plans are fairly elementary to fulfill, and can be finished in one afternoon depending on the woodworkers skill level.

Also, keep in mind that not all wood project plans are created equal. Check the plans you get for detailed directions and an acceptable level of visual examples to follow. Good woodworking plans will help the project go smoothly and make the whole process more enjoyable.

Just after you decide on a set of plans, you need to decide upon the type of wood you will use to construct it. I've seen them built from Pine, Maple, Oak, Walnut, and Cherry just to name a few types of wood. Pine is very popular due to the fact that it's a soft wood, easy to work with, and is fairly inexpensive.

When considering your project, you should bear in mind your skill level and your ease of access to the tools you will need to complete your project. Make sure you have the skills and the tools called for to finish your project; you don't want to get started and find out you can't complete your project.

If your not sure about your skill level or your tool situation, you can always resort to buying a rocking horse kit. The kits come with prefabricated parts that are easy to put together; thus you only need a limited amount of skill or tools to complete the project. A rocking horse kit can save a lot of time and frustration for newer less skilled woodworkers, but still allows the user to produce a fine wood project.

Which ever route you decide to go, kit or no kit; the rocking horse has been a favorite project of woodworkers everywhere for a long time, so have fun with it.
