Risks Associated With Facelift and How to Deal With Them

Despite the popularity of the facelift procedure to tighten and tone facial features, it does have its risks. Though they are rare, some complications might arise after you have this surgery. Knowing what to do in case they appear is helpful and might even save your life.

One of the most common complications is an allergic reaction to the anesthesia. If your body is not used to it or does not tolerate it well, you might feel nauseated soon after being injected with it. Typically, you will not have to go to your doctor, as it should only last a few hours. If the feeling does not pass after the first day, advise your surgeon of the issue.

If there is any bleeding under the skin, a hematoma may occur, causing some swelling near it. You need to go to your doctor if this happens after you leave the clinic. You will likely need an operation to remove the built up blood from the area.

This is the most common risk of a facelift, and occurs more in men than women, though the chances of it happening at all are still slim.

As with any surgery, an infection is always a risk you take with a facelift. If you notice any redness, swelling, and unusual warmth in a specific area, you should contact your surgeon. A fever, drainage, and general pain are also symptoms of an infection. You will need to receive antibiotics. Infections are easily treated, but you can't do it from home.

Nerve damage is another risk. Any nerve issues you feel in your face are probably temporary and should disappear after a few weeks, once the area is healed. It is often caused by either anesthesia or a hematoma. However, in very few cases, the nerve damage can be permanent.

With any surgery, you risk the occurrence of a blood clot. This is caused by staying in one position for too long while recovering. General anesthesia and a procedure that lasts a particularly long time can increase your chances of clotting. If not caught by your doctor in time, clotting can result in death, which is why you will be checked for this issue.

Clearly, a facelift presents some risks, just like any surgery. In most cases, listening to your doctor's instructions can reduce the chances of these issues occurring. However, some problems cannot be avoided, which is why recognizing symptoms and asking questions of your surgeon are crucial.

With the help of the procedure facelift Columbus Ohio based plastic surgeon can give you a more rested and youthful appearance without looking tight or "over-operated." To learn more about this procedure, visit http://www.donaldsonplasticsurgery.com
