The town of Richmond - North Yorkshire is located along the River Swale and is the administration center of the Richmondshire district. This small town of less than 10, 000 borders the Yorkshire Dale National Park. Richmond is the result of an honour from William I.

Count Alan was granted a tract of land form William I in 1071. This tract was given to Alan in return for his service. The honour or land grant originally belonged to Edwin Earl of Mercia. This land consisted of an area originally encompassing most of the land from the River Tees to the River Ure. This land varied in terrain and included the mountainous area of the Pennines to the low lands of the Vale of York.

Count Alan had a castle built at the center of this land along the River Swale in what is now the center of Richmond. The castle was built in 1086 and the walls of the castle still exist today. These walls can be found in what is now the market place. The Richmond Castle is in the modern town centre and is a major attraction.

Other historic places that are of an interest to tourists include the Green Howards Regiment museum and the Old Trinity Church. Also popular is the Richmondshire Museum. The Georgian Theatre is a very popular tourist destination and has existed since the end of the 18th century.

An actor by the name of Samuel Butler erected the original theater. This theater can be found just outside of the grounds to the market place. The theater which was popular in the beginning of the 1800's gradually lost popularity and declined greatly, which eventually led to its closure in 1848. After years of being used as a warehouse. In 1963 it was restored and is now the Georgian theater Royal and also contains a museum dedicated to the original theater and shows that have been presented there.
