Count Alan was granted a tract of land form William I in 1071. This tract was given to Alan in return for his service. The honour or land grant originally belonged to Edwin Earl of Mercia. This land varied in terrain and included the mountainous area of the Pennines to the low lands of the Vale of York.
Count Alan had a castle built at the center of this land along the River Swale in what is now the center of Richmond. The castle was built in 1086 and the walls of the castle still exist today. These walls can be found in what is now the market place. The Richmond Castle is in the modern town centre and is a major attraction.
