Reviewing Puberty

For girls, puberty usually begins between the ages of nine and thirteen years and lasts about two or three years. The first sign of puberty is usually the beginning of breast development, followed by the growth of a few pubic hairs. By midpuberty a girl continues to grow breasts as well as pubic, leg, and underarm hair, but she doesn't get her first menstrual period yet. Her first period doesn't usually happen until one or two years after the first signs of puberty.

First, inside a girl's body, the vagina, ovaries, and uterus grow and many girls get a clear or white discharge from their vagina. Then, she'll experience menses, or her first period. During midpuberty, a girl also goes through her "growth spurt," during which she gets both taller and heavier. It is extremely important to know that it is 100 percent normal for a girl to gain twenty-four pounds of fat during the two or three years of puberty.' In fact, during puberty, a girl's body fat content rises from about 8 percent to about 25 percent. This increase in the amount of fat on her body is needed to help it get ready to have a baby.

The start of the period is usually the signal that a girl has entered late puberty. A girl's clitoris grows larger as do her vaginal "lips" or labia. Her pubic hair also gets coarser and grows a lot more. During this time, she continues to grow a bit taller and larger, and her breasts finish developing.
