Retirement homes are designed to serve the needs of senior citizens. Residents either rent or buy a unit. Most homes offer several amenities, including: meals (usually one or more a day), some medical care, recreational and social activities, and transportation to area doctors and shopping.
There are several criteria to think about when evaluating a retirement home, including:
• Location. Where does the person wish to live? Proximity to children, friends and community activities may be important. Does the individual prefer city life or a suburban environment? Climate and geographic preferences should also be considered.
• Cost. An in-depth financial review is in order to calculate the amount of funds available for a retirement home. This includes initial fees as well as monthly expenses. Will the primary residence be sold, generating cash for retirement home expenses? If not, are there enough funds to support two dwellings. The impact of taxes also cannot be forgotten.
• Health care. Find out what is offered at the home, and the availability of additional medical needs in the community.
• Space requirements. This might seem like a trivial matter, but moving senior citizens from their home into a small apartment can be traumatic. The individual should be a part of the decision making process.
• Outside community. If the individual is relocating, what facilities are important? If the person is healthy enough to be out in the community, safety is a primary concern. The recreational, cultural, and educational activities crucial to the senior citizen should also be considered.
This is not a comprehensive checklist for retirement homes, but it is a start. It is important to do in-depth research of potential homes, and visit the ones under consideration. The more research conducted, places visited, and people talked to (both staff and home residents), and the more informed your decision would be. In addition, the likelihood of a successful match will increase.
