For the newcomer, writing a resume can be a difficult experience. You try to figure out exactly what to include and what to leave out, compromising on something that is not exactly what you had in mind originally. Never fear, it gets easier if you are willing to put in some time and effort to complete a quality document. Nonetheless, there are errors that tend to get these papers immediately in the reject pile, making it easier for the human resources person to whittle down the number of applicants for a position before they even had a chance to interview. I'm sure that you don't want to be included in this category, so let's see how to avoid these tragic resume errors.
Don't include any spelling errors on your resume. These are easy to avoid -- just use spell check and have another trusted associate read your document before printing for any other grammar problems.
Don't use colored paper! Human resources personnel hate this and will tend to not even bother with a preliminary glimpse at your resume.
Don't write in the first person. You are both the applicant and writer, it is already implied that you did these things, it isn't necessary to use a pronoun to further state the same fact.
Don't write more than one page. Your entire job history isn't necessary and probably won't get look at by the reader. Only relevant job experience related to the position or going back 10 to 15 years is necessary. Anything else will be asked at the interview.
Don't forget your cover letter. It is the introduction to the resume and is looked upon very favorably by hiring managers who will know look upon you as professional. This will help to separate you from the crowd.
Follow these tips and get your resume the attention that it deserves.
Good luck.
