Since the introduction of full CD quality music in video games during the 1990's (thanks to the introduction of using discs and CD's for games instead of cartridges), the video game industry has expanded exponentially. Gamers now expect a full-on emotional, original and memorable score for each game that they play, and will be harsh in their criticism if it does not deliver. In this era of gaming, where the amount of detail that games can have potentially, thanks to the amount of space on a Blu-Ray disk or a computer's hard-drive, is enormous, game developers have no excuses for not coming up with a great soundtrack. In addition to this, the budgets that most blockbuster games now operate under can be compared to Hollywood films themselves, so there is certainly no financial restraints.
This is reflected in the Resident Evil 5 soundtrack, which was composed by Kota Suzuki. Kota also worked on Devil May Cry 4, where his soundtrack was given great reviews, leading him to work on the Resident Evil 5 soundtrack.
Kota recorded the music for RE5 in Los Angeles, using a 103-strong orchestra to bring his ideas to life. The developers at Capcom spoke regularly with Kota, and told him that their idea was to make the game feel like a movie. To do this, they'd really need to suck the player into the game, and to use the soundtrack as an aid to what was happening on the screen.
Kota wrote a great piece of music that was used for the main theme of the Resident Evil 5 soundtrack, as well as some excellent ambient pieces for when the action is at a lull, and to build up the tension. It is well-known that music has a massive effect on our emotions, and there is no better example than in Resident Evil 5, as we are left feeling exhilarated, frightened and determined to succeed.
