Religious Origins of Parapsychology

Parapsychology bears its roots from spiritualism which in turn has risen from beliefs propagated by religion. This study gained popularity in the 19th and early 20th centuries concerning issues like after-life, future and spirits. Despite developments in science, these values continue to run parallel with the main-stream.

Blind following of religion and superstition paved way for spiritualism. History has proof of such a rise in Hydesville, New York in the 18th century where the 'Fox Sisters', Margate and Kate, used their toes to make spooky noises. They performed in many road shows, stages and in front of followers. They fine tuned their talent and made people believe in their ability to communicate with spirits.

Newspapers were critical and loud in declaring these claims as false. But the strong roots of spiritualism saw many follow this trend blindly. This was turned in to a profession which earned the sisters well. It was another part of the same media which fanned the beliefs by positive propaganda. The result was ever growing followers, mushrooming of self-styled 'medium' people who claimed to have powers to talk to the dead, and swelling pockets of such practitioners. Even a confession to fraud by the sisters did not end the trend.

The year 1882 saw a similar rising in Society of Physical Research, Britain. Here sessions with audiences saw unusual happenings demonstrated by turning of tables. Scientists checked these claims using scientific stepwise analysis under stringent rules and conditions and proved them wrong.

Work in this field still continues with stricter conditions resulting in fewer and lesser dramatic results. This only proves lack of authenticity of claims made in this field.
