Reducing Accidents in the Workplace

Accidents are a norm in our daily lives. They can occur at any place, and any time. One of the common accident places is the workplace, and reducing these accidents is a challenge for organisations.

A company or an organisation is responsible for employees. The people who work for it are a major concern for them. Workplaces can be dangerous areas, especially if the employees are dealing with hazardous substances, or heavy machinery. Thus, there have to be safety procedures that minimise accidents.

Many accidents are just caused by ignorance, and absence of safety equipment, and procedures, and are avoidable if dealt with in the correct manner. The first step in reducing accidents is to have proper safety procedures for all processes. For example, if your employees are dealing with heavy machinery, you must set out the safety processes, and steps that they have to take for dealing with that machinery. You must educate them about how to handle the machinery properly.

For this purpose, training is necessary. Before you allow employees to handle a piece of equipment, or go through a process, make sure he has received the appropriate training of how to handle it. For example, if you have employees working with hazardous chemicals in a laboratory, make sure that they know how to handle them safely.

You must also provide safety equipment and uniforms to your employees that keep them safe from harm. It should be a strict rule that employees wear gloves, helmets, uniforms, or any other relevant piece of clothing at all times when handling machinery, or chemicals, so that the chances of accidents occurring are minimised.

The second step is educating employees about what to do in case something goes wrong. It is a fact that accidents are bound to happen sometime, even if you take all the precautions. Emergency eyewash stations and emergency showers must be installed at nearby locations, so that they can promptly be used in case of an accident. Similarly, first aid kits should always be kept handy, so that the situation is controlled. If the chances of harm are high, then it is better to keep a doctor or medical staff at hand during work hours. In addition, fire extinguishers should always be available, and emergency exits should be defined.

There should be written safety manuals that all employees should read, so that they know how to act in certain situations. Apart from this, the company should make sure that routine inspections are held of all the equipment, and machinery, so that if there are any discrepancies, they are caught earlier.

Safety tags are extremely important to ensure workplace safety. They can warn employees of any danger, and thus, prevent accidents. You can use equipment tags, repair tags, or lock out tags, depending on your requirements. Thus, by following these steps, you can work towards reducing workplace accidents, and make the work environment safe and healthy for your employees.
