Reduce Heat Loss With a Chimney Balloon

Expert Author Colm Griffin

Chimney Balloons are a very effective product which will stop cold drafts coming down your chimney and prevent heat loss going upwards. It is estimated that up to 80% of heat is lost up your chimney every year. Chimney Balloons are an effective way of tackling this problem.

Chimney balloons are simply installed in the flue of your chimney and will also prevent soot, dirt and debris coming down your fireplace and into your living room. They will also eliminate the loud whistling or howling noise that emanates from your chimney on windy nights.

Made of 3 ply-poly membrane chimney balloons are tough and durable and nearly impossible to burst. They are also reusable so anytime you fancy a night in front of an open fire you can simply deflate your chimney balloon and reinstall in your chimney flue when your are finished using the fireplace.

Chimney balloons come in various sizes to fit almost any chimney flue. In Ireland most modern houses built in the 1970's or later have a round shaped flue. The balloons come in a regular size which will effectively work in any round chimney flue that is between 7 Inches and 9 Inches in diameter.

Chimney flues in older houses tend to have square or rectangular shaped flues. To measure your flue simply use a torch and a measuring tape. About 1 foot up your fireplace the chimney will narrow. Measure back to front and side to side. Square shaped balloons come in a 9 Inch x 9 Inch size and 12 Inch x 12 Inch size. The rectangular size comes in a 15 Inch x 9 Inch size, a 24 Inch x 12 Inch size and a 36 Inch x 15 Inch size.

To install your balloon you will need to use an inflation tube. Some distributions include one automatically as part of the packet.

To install:

1: Open your pack and roll out your balloon.
2: Remove small rubber hose from chimney balloon handle and attach inflation tube.
3: Blow a little into balloon so as to slightly inflate
4: Place balloon in the location you require it to be when fully inflated
5: Blow into inflation tube until you start to feel resistance. Continue until the balloon is firm to touch.
6: Close tap to ensure balloon is airtight
7: Check the balloon is firmly secure by gently pushing handle into balloon to ensure that it doesn't move.
8: Remove inflation tube and store for future use. Alternatively leave the tube hanging down into your fireplace as a reminder that the balloon has been installed.
9: Alternatively place red warning sign that comes as part of the pack near your fireplace to alert people to remove the balloon before lighting fire.

Chimney balloons come with a 12 month guarantee but should last you for many many years. If by chance someone lights a fire whilst a chimney balloon is fitted the balloon will simply chervil up and will not do any damage in your room.
