Think how much you have invested to buy that 6 x 6 square-meter apartment. Losing one (1) square-meter to an old sofa that outlived its usefulness is actually losing 2.7 value of your investment. However, come to positively think of it - what could be a nuisance to you is a huge relief to others. Instead of forcing yourself to cope with those space-grabbers, your best option is to find a charity organization looking for people who would want to donate furniture.
Whether we like it or not, one or two of the furniture in our homes have already outlived its usefulness. As we satisfy our craving for better and newer furniture, the old ones are competing with the new ones for that much-needed space.
As a room gets more cramped when new furniture or appliance is brought in, your movement becomes more restricted. In comparison to the first day when you moved in, sweeping the floor became a more difficult job because you would have to move more obstacles to sweep dirt from under it.
Auctioning your good old furniture on eBay is a wonderful idea. Nevertheless, no one living 20-kilometers away would seriously pay attention to buying an old sofa when they have to pick it up from your home. They would rather buy a brand new one because the dealer would surely deliver the furniture into your doorstep.
Unlike a usual household trash, disposal of furniture is a lot more complicated. Placing an old leather sofa outside your house makes your landscape look awkward. Allowing it to be exposed to the elements would reduce the poor furniture into an eyesore that even the crew of the city's garbage truck will refuse to collect. Moreover, confining it to your storeroom will deprive you that precious space for goods needing storage.
Whom Can You Help by Decluttering Your Home?
An old table may enable a poor family who just moved in to a new apartment face each other during meals. Between many priorities such as food, clothing and education, an ordinary wage earner could hardly decide to buy a dining table right after moving in.
Many children do not have the luxury of making their homework on a comfortable desk. They do it lying face down on their living room's floor. For a child, this is not conducive to learning the proper way to write, where the pencil should stand and pointed to the shoulders. Children who are used to writing in this position tend to bring their eyes so close to the paper, and thus, causing severe stress that may cause vision impairment in the future. Reading in this position also causes heavy stress on the neck.
An old sofa could save a poor child from a respiratory disease because he would be spared from sleeping on a cold concrete floor. It could also afford an elderly something convenient to rest a tired back.
Whom to Call To Facilitate a Donation?
There are many organizations you can call to donate furniture in the United States, the National Furniture Bank Association networks throughout the country to collect and distribute unwanted old furniture to the needy people that need these. The Reuse Development Organization or ReDO, another non-profit organization, encourages the reusing of discarded items such as old furniture.
