Rare Primate "Re-Discovered"

A scientist based in London, England who specialises in finding animals which are incredibly difficult to find. And he has once again come up trumps. In the central highlands of the island of Sri Lanka, one of the shyest and hardest to see animals in the world, the Horton Plains Slender Loris has been sighted. This subspecies has only had 4 confirmed reports since it was first described in over 60 years ago, the last one coming eight years ago after scientists fleetingly spotted an eye shine whilst spotlighting.

The research was conducted over 1000 night time surveys and concluded in the filming of the Horton Plains Slender Loris as well as capturing 3 individuals look enough to get measurements. This is all part of the on going programme which is looking into the populations and threats faced for the worlds rarest animals. This is fantastic news as now pressure can be applied to the local authorities in order to stop or at least slow down the development of tea plantations which spread almost uncontrollable in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, in addition to this Eco-tourism can develop to take the burden off the tea plantations in terms of having to provide jobs and income to the local area.

The programme has come up with some other tremendous results from around the world including putting pressure on the New Zealand government to abandon plans for a 7000 hectare mine to help the dwindling populations of two top priority amphibians; Archey's frog (Leiopelma archeyi) and Hochstetter's frog (Leiopelma hochstetteri). They have also done work and research on animals such as the large-eared jerboa, saiga antelope, long-beaked echidna, bumble-bee bat, Hispaniolan solenodon, fossa and many many more.
