If you are considering buying a radio controlled boat then you will want to check this out as long as you are into extreme fun and enjoy the outdoors. This is a great hobby for you and your kids as anyone can take part and really enjoy the experience. You don't have to have any training or experience as you learn by doing.
Radio controlled boats are scaled down versions of full size boats such as sailboats, hydroplanes, tugboats, catamarans, deep v, submarines and the list goes on. These scaled down versions come in different forms and sizes ranging from 6" up to a whopping 84" long. They are controlled by a radio controller such as a "stick" type or a "pistol" style and the boat itself has electrical components/battery powered or a gas or nitro powered engine. Some of these boats are definitely not toys and are extremely powerful. Right out of the box some of the gas or nitro radio controlled boats can go 25-40 miles per hour! That's some serious speed to contend with (Dad will enjoy these)! My personal favorites are the sport boats and hydroplanes because of the incredible speed factor but for some people sailboats are a way to kick back, relax and watch their boat gracefully cut through the water. It all really comes down to personal preference. There are many boats that are geared towards children 6 years old and up and these are generally the electric radio controlled boats.
Where can you run your boat? You can run your RC boat in pretty much any body of clean water such as ponds, lakes rivers and even the ocean. This will also depend on the type of boat that you have purchased. Intermediate to advanced boaters are better suited to Hydroplanes and catamaran models and should run them in calmer waters. Beginners are more inclined to buy the Deep V and mono hull boats as they can run them in either calm or choppy water. They are easier to handle and maneuver in choppy water thus making it an easy transition for the beginner. Again it comes down to personal preference, age and experience. Check with your local bylaws to make sure that you can run your boat in a particular area and ask them if there are any restrictions on either gas or electric boats.
RC boats can be run year round depending on your areas climate. The more tropical and milder climates have an advantage as they can run them all year. Some other maintenance items during weather changes that you may have to adjust on your boat are the fuel mixes and propeller angles.
If you are looking for a cool new hobby or think that a friend or family member would enjoy getting involved then check out some radio controlled boats and the RC industry. You may just find what you've been looking for in a hobby.
