Is there really an easy way to stop smoking?
Many people decide that the one thing they can do to improve their lives is to say goodbye to nicotine forever. It's a good decision to make and is without question the most important step any one can make towards a healthier tomorrow. Smoking is such a destructive habit that whole industries have grown up to help the addicted smoker to ditch the cigarettes. There are endless solutions presented by companies and gurus, and masses of reformed ex-smokers only too willing to share their own paths to freedom.
Nicotine is a physically addictive drug so there is biological bridge to cross. There is also evidence for a psychological dependence that amounts to mental addiction. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy can help with this psychological side of nicotine addiction. The very act of relaxing deeply can in itself be of benefit. And when certain suggestions are made in this relaxed state there can be a profound contact which changes forever how we think about smoking. There is a connection that can be made to the subconscious, where the deep rooted psychological addiction lives.
Unfortunately our brains are primitive, and they rely on a primordial thought system that doesn't take into account long-term knowledge. The primordial response is all about immediate survival and reinforcing behaviours that bring about an increase in the ability to survive, however short term that increase is, and whatever the long-term consequences of that short-term behaviour.
The subconscious will reinforce any action that results in what it perceives as an immediate benefit. Nicotine is a powerful drug that brings about a quick short-term benefit for the smoker's mental processes. However briefly and however slight, the subconscious only sees this very brief increase in synaptic activity. It is aware of the increase in certain neuro-chemical processes, and in its primitive way it sees this as being beneficial in the primordial quest for survival. The subconscious mind doesn't take into account any kind of long-term considerations. It is the fight or flight mechanism turned against us.
The conscious mind is of course aware of the horrific damage that smoking can do to our bodies and the detrimental effect nicotine addiction can have on our lives. Through hypnosis we can reconcile these two opposing thought processes and release the hold nicotine has over our lives
