For most people giving up smoking is a very hard thing to do. This is not surprising when you consider that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world.
When you successfully give up smoking you will soon realise that this will not be the end of the struggle. Giving up is actually the easy part, it is staying off that is the real challenge.
If you have been a long time smoker you will still be in some way dependent on the need for a nicotine fix. These situations can usually appear when you are under stress or you find yourself that you cannot cope with certain situations. At these times the temptations to go out and buy a packet of cigarettes can be intense.
The little voice or demon inside your head will provide you with strong and persuasive arguments that you are a fool to give up smoking. The demon will remind you how great it feels when you light up the first cigarette of the day and the euphoria that you feel when you get the hit from the nicotine in your brain cells. It is funny that this little demon inside your head does not remind you of the damage that smoking does to your body, internal organs and skin.
In these situations you must try with all your power and focus not to give in to the smoking demon. You will find that this is easier said than done. Some people have the mental strength to ignore the demon however many of us need a little help.
When you find yourself tempted to light up follow these tips to banish the temptation from your mind.
1) When you have successfully given up cigarettes then repeat the following phrase to yourself when you feel weak....."I am a non-smoker, I do not smoke, I do not need to smoke".
2) Another saying you can use is "I choose not to smoke because I want to be around for my family and friends".
It is important that you are aware of the triggers that can set you off. When you are more prepared you will be in a better position not to give into the temptation. It is also a good idea to have distractions that will keep you focused on other things. These should be healthy things such as taking up regular exercise or taking up a hobby that absorbs your mind.
